During my first 5-6 years as an entrepreneur, I had to “bootstrap” every business I started.

And like so many other entrepreneurs, I hit my fair share of roadblocks. (Actually, “roadblocks” doesn’t even come close to describing the disasters, disappointment and depression I endured.)

But, as is often the case, my biggest successes are born from my biggest failures.

Such was the case in 2003.

I was working a full-time job at Nissan and had been desperately burning the midnight oil trying to get my online business off the ground. At the time, I had zero experience of product creation and was more than $75,000 in debt.

I stumbled across all the same books, blog posts, and videos about building an online business that you did. And, like you, I thought to myself that if they could do it, then maybe I could too.

So I diligently did my research and noticed a pattern:

All the most successful people online – the ones bragging about their yachts and laptop-on-the-beach lifestyles – seemed to be TEACHING something.

Clearly, selling digital teaching products was the ticket to riches that I’d been searching for. Now all I had to do was create a digital product of my own, and my life would be instantly transformed!

With my back against the wall and the wolf at the door, I went to work.

I discovered a huge desire in a particular market… then I spent more than six months putting my heart and soul into creating the best digital product I could possibly imagine on the topic.

And when I finally finished it and released it to the world… it bombed.

In fact, I remember very clearly the one sale that I made on launch day. (Clearly not a good return on investment.)

But why did it fail?

At first I thought it was because I didn’t have an audience. So I scrambled to build my blog and apply every traffic generation strategy I could find to get the word out about what I was doing.

And some of the strategies worked. Pretty soon, I had a decent-sized email list… but still nobody wanted to buy my product!

I was just about ready to throw in the towel, but I persisted in the mere hope that something would work eventually.

Finally – after six long, painful and humiliating years of one business failure after another – my first successful venture involved private label rights (PLR) material.

I found a package of 25,000 ebooks with full resale rights selling on eBay for $50. I swiped the best books from that collection, repurposed them, and then sold them all individually… over and over again.

And it got even better than that, too.

After hearing about the success I was having, one of my work colleagues asked me if I would teach him how I was doing what I was doing.

I resisted at first, but then I realized:

If people at work were impressed enough to ask me to teach them what I was doing, then maybe others might want to see how I was doing it as well.

So finally, I decided to compile a short ebook teaching what I knew, put up a quick sales page, and sent out an email to my list letting them know they could go and check it out.

Honestly, I wasn’t really expecting anyone to buy it.

But much to my surprise, people did buy it. They bought it in droves.

Long story short, in only six months that little ebook made enough money for me to finally buy my freedom from my J-O-B!

Since then, I’ve created over 100 digital products. Many of these products have gone on to generate six or seven figures… and have supported me with a lifestyle that would be envied by some of the most successful CEOs in the country.

Yep… all that from a back to the wall, wolf at the door, financial desperation digital product business.

Now, I’ll be honest with you… those are terrible conditions in which to start a new business.

Ideally, you should have an income source and some money to invest. Because you’re not guaranteed fast growth like I experienced. But hey, I did what I had to do.

The point is this:

Selling digital products is an awesome business model.
