First lets discuss the definition of a blog. Here is the definition given by Wikipedia: A blog (a contraction of the term “weblog”) is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. “Blog” can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
A simpler definition of a blog is a website where the coding is handled mainly by the server making it possible for even the most web illiterate person to start an online presence. A blog is set up kinda like a journal the user being expected to put in a title then write about the title. Does a blog have to be about you? This is where and why blogging has accelerated past other forms of media since you have the ability to write about anything you wish and actually begin to build a readership. You can choose to start a blog about business or about your cat fluffy that is the beauty if the blogosphere it has no rules. There are plenty who wish to become an authority and have the ability to tell others what is right and what is wrong when it comes to blogging, but in reality there is no one, but your audience (if you care what they think) that can tell you what is right or wrong.
Another question I run into from time to time is new people on the web asking where they can start a blog for free. The two best resources which will allow you to start a blog is Blogger and Wordpress both of which you can find by going to Google and searching for them. Once you set up a free account you will be able to begin posting which of course is the most important thing when it comes to blogging. You must be willing to create content constantly and make the content unique, helpful, and actually about what the title says. If for example you have a title such as ?Twitter is Great? then begin posting about your last vacation with no mention of twitter throughout your post the people who come to your blog looking for info about twitter will be disappointed and will probably leave you some nasty comments or you may end up getting a few hate emails. When you decide you want to start a blog make sure it is on a subject which you know well and something you are very passionate about. Usually when a blog is started in the blogosphere it will not begin getting recognition until after the first year of its creation so don?t expect much until after the first year. Also if you don?t enjoy writing or are very shy and not willing to share your point of view then it may be better you try some other form of online presence since blogging is the most personal web presence one can create.
